The Preparatory Years provide the academic foundations for secondary schooling, but also serve as preparation for the challenges and opportunities that children will inevitably face throughout their future endeavours.
Our staffing team is comprised of experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated teachers who go above and beyond to ensure that all children are appropriately challenged, supported and importantly develop a love for learning and a confidence within their abilities.
"We aim to harness every child's innate curiosity, encouraging interaction, dialogue and engagement through a range of educational opportunities, both within and beyond the classroom walls."
OUR PREP SCHOOL
Throughout the school, pupils are taught in bright and engaging classrooms which provide a warm and nurturing learning environment.
There are a range of extensive specialists facilities at SHS which include Music, Languages and Science rooms a Library; a specialist Art & DT studio, an ICT suite, the Library, and extensive on and off-site sporting facilities.
Pupils also have access to two outdoor play areas, and one vast indoor area for rainy days. In addition, Bishop's Park is on the doorstep, and is used for outdoor free-play, exploring, "well-being walks," and the Pre-Prep "Outdoor Classroom."
ages 4 -7
From Reception to Year 2, children are settled within a form class where they focus on building the core areas of Reading, Writing and Mathematics. We aim to deliver a holistic and broad curriculum in the Pre-Prep, with cross-curricular links and exploration encouraged to allow deeper learning within the foundational curriculum.
“By offering a rounded and broad curriculum, together with an extensive range of extra-curricular activities, we work to inspire children to find a joy in learning from an early age that will motivate them throughout their time at Sinclair House.”
All Pre-Prep children enjoy learning a half-termly topic within their Humanities lessons and the Outdoor Classroom session is a very popular time of the week.
From Reception upwards, pupils also benefit from specialist subject teachers in Art and Design, Languages, Music and Sports.
THE PREP SCHOOL
ages 7 - 11
Within the Prep School, children begin to build upon the skills learnt in the Pre-Prep and we encourage them to apply and develop their skill sets in new contexts and situations within their curriculum learning. They are allocated a form tutor who supports them pastorally and works with specialist teachers to monitor their overall progress.
While the academic focus remains on teaching the key literacy and numeracy skills, we continue to deliver a holistic and broad-ranging curriculum where the children can explore cross-curricular links where possible and our curriculum is enriched by specialist teaching in English, Maths, Languages and Science, Drama and across the Humanities (Geography, Religious Studies and History).
In addition to our core curriculum, all pupils participate in weekly Drama (LAMDA teaching for Year 5 &6 is taught within their Drama lessons), Music, Choir, Art, Design & Technology, P.E & Games.
SUPPORT & CHALLENGE
A core aspect of our ethos at Sinclair House School is supporting and extending each child to achieve their full potential.
Children are carefully observed throughout the school and we maintain close, collaborative relationships with families and encourage parents to be actively involved in their child’s education.
A CONSISTENT GRADIENT OF LEARNING
At Sinclair House, we believe that education is about more than just assessment and results.
These crucial preparatory years also provide children with essential and foundational knowledge and understanding that they build upon and help them to give meaning to their lives, as well as qualifications and skills to help them in the future.
However, it is our aim to ensure that all children have secure foundations in the key subject areas and we continually monitor pupil progress, able to identify any areas which may require additional support or further extension.
This view underpins our teaching and learning at SHS as we aim to inspire a love of learning for our children whilst also prepare them for the competitive 11+ and exit school exams.
