The Preparatory Years provide the academic foundations for secondary schooling, but also serve as preparation for the challenges and opportunities that children will inevitably face throughout their future endeavours.
Our staffing team is comprised of experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated teachers who go above and beyond to ensure that all children are appropriately challenged, supported and importantly develop a love for learning and a confidence within their abilities.
"We aim to harness every child's innate curiosity, encouraging interaction, dialogue and engagement through a range of educational opportunities, both within and beyond the classroom walls."
OUR PREP SCHOOL
Throughout the school, pupils are taught in bright, purposeful and engaging classrooms which provide a warm and nurturing learning environment.
There is a range of extensive facilities at SHS, including a specialist Music room; a specialist Art & DT room; a specialist Science room; an ICT suit; a Languages room; a Library; and a covered Sports Hall.
Pupils also have access to a kitchen for Food Technology lessons and a sheltered rooftop gardening area where they cultivate fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers.
Our Reception intake is comprised of internal children moving up from our Nursery, and those applying from other Nurseries.
Places are offered by order of date of registration and priority is given to siblings of children already within the school.
ages 4 -7
From Reception to Year 2, children are settled within a form class where they focus on building the core areas of Reading, Writing and Mathematics. We aim to deliver a holistic and broad curriculum in the Pre-Prep, with cross-curricular links and exploration encouraged to allow deeper learning within the foundational curriculum.
“By offering a rounded and broad curriculum, together with an extensive range of extra-curricular activities, we work to inspire children to find a joy in learning from an early age that will motivate them throughout their time at Sinclair House.”
All Pre-Prep children enjoy learning a half-termly topic within their Humanities lessons and the Outdoor Classroom session is a very popular time of the week.
From Reception upwards, pupils also benefit from specialist subject teachers in Art and Design, Languages, Music and Sports.
THE PREP SCHOOL
ages 7 - 11
Within the Prep School (KS2: from Year 3 to Year 6), children begin to build upon the skills learnt in the Pre-Prep and we encourage them to apply and develop their skill sets in new contexts and situations within their curriculum learning. They are allocated a form tutor who supports them pastorally and works with specialist teachers to monitor their overall progress.
While the academic focus remains on teaching the key literacy and numeracy skills, we continue to deliver a holistic and broad-ranging curriculum where the children can explore cross-curricular links where possible and our curriculum is enriched by specialist teaching in English, Maths, Languages and Science, Drama and across the Humanities (Geography, Religious Studies and History).
In addition to our core curriculum, all pupils participate in weekly Drama (LAMDA teaching for Year 5 &6 is taught within their Drama lessons), Music, Choir, Art, Design & Technology, P.E & Games.
SUPPORT & CHALLENGE
A core aspect of our ethos at Sinclair House School is supporting and extending each child to achieve their full potential. Children are carefully observed throughout the school and we maintain close, collaborative relationships with families and encourage parents to be actively involved in their child’s education.
All teachers differentiate across ability groups, providing both extension and support when necessary. As a teaching team, we also offer small group and one-to-one extension or support opportunities if appropriate within the timetable; this may be led by our Head of Learning Support, Class Teacher, Teaching Assistant or an external agency.
We are able to cater for a specific percentage of children with special educational needs (SEND) and all children who are part of the SEND register receive an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which is reviewed and shared with parents on a termly basis.
As a school, when necessary, we are able to work in partnership with external agencies when extra professional support is required.
A CONSISTENT GRADIENT OF LEARNING
At Sinclair House, we believe that education is about more than just assessment and results. These crucial preparatory years also provide children with essential and foundational knowledge and understanding that they build upon and help them to give meaning to their lives, as well as qualifications and skills to help them in the future.
However, it is our aim to ensure that all children have secure foundations in the key subject areas and we continually monitor pupil progress, able to identify any areas which may require additional support or further extension.
This view underpins our teaching and learning at SHS as we aim to inspire a love of learning for our children whilst also prepare them for the competitive 11+ and exit school exams.
